Perhaps the "ticking clock" also explains why people have an endless compulsion to predict the end of the world. I suppose overcoming our human weaknesses and discovering the mysteries of the universe isn't interesting enough. Of course, the only catastrophes that could reasonably be expected would have to be man made, so hopefully everyone can chill out until the next apocalypse.
