"Butterland"
DAY FLYING INSECT
Perhaps you can help me, sir.
DAY FLYING INSECT
I am from a distant planet.
DAY FLYING INSECT
I came to earth to visit, but I am not strong enough to fly in your air.
GUY
So, you're stuck down there?
DAY FLYING INSECT
*flap* *flap*
DAY FLYING INSECT
It appears that way.
DAY FLYING INSECT
Perhaps you can help me return to my starship?
GUY
What do I do?
DAY FLYING INSECT
My ship is three days of eastward travel from here. I will die by then.
DAY FLYING INSECT
With your leg length, we could substantially reduce travel time.
GUY
Hmm. You're a funny looking thing.
DAY FLYING INSECT
Normally, I wouldn't stand here and be insulted. But under the circumstances.
GUY
Sorry. You should ride up here. It's the best view.
GUY
If you can't fly, why did you travel so far from your ship?
DAY FLYING INSECT
I couldn't return to my ship. I went searching for help.
GUY
Why couldn't you return to your ship?
DAY FLYING INSECT
I parked my ship safely in the air, but when I attempted to exit, your atmosphere was too thin to support my weight.
I fell to the ground.
GUY
How are you going to get back to your ship if it's in the air?
DAY FLYING INSECT
Its distance from the ground is about the same as your head. You should be able to assist me.
GUY
Why do I get the feeling this is some sort of trap?
DAY FLYING INSECT
Your species is naturally fearful of what is different.
GUY
Talking insects *are* quite different.
DAY FLYING INSECT
Said the talking ape.
DAY FLYING INSECT
Insects on your planet talk as well. You simply do not bother to learn their language.
GUY
Yeah, like an insect would have anything interesting to talk about.
[After Several Hours]
GUY
Hey, there it is!
GUY
Boy, that was a quiet trip.
GUY helps DAY FLYING INSECT into his starship.
GUY
Um. Sorry about that insect comment earlier.
GUY
Not much on goodbyes.
GUY
What the?
DAY FLYING INSECT returns in his starship firing lasers at GUY.
Title-text: I've always been amazed that we're not more interested in learning how to communicate better with other species on this planet. Or other countries for that matter.
I think the insect was a butterfly. Also this strip makes a good point, we seem set on trying to communicate with apes when they aren't even the most intelligent animals, what's up with that?
